It is for Jame,s as duke of York, that New York was named. He was also the first king of Scotland ( James VII ) not to be crowned in Scotland. His cruel streak led to persecution of his subjects in the name of Catholicism in both his realms, as a result he was deposed by William of Orange in 1688, but continued as king of Ireland until 1690.

Son of Henry VIII’s third wife, and well educated under the care of his step mother, Henry’s sixth wife. During his short and zealously Protestant reign many schools were founded and the Common Prayer Book introduced 1548. He died at 15 of consumption and congenital syphilis passed on from his father.
