For nearly his entire life, Drayton lived and painted at Gore's Landing Rice Lake, Ontario. He painted landscapes, lake scenes and canoeing activity in oil and watercolour. This evocative sunset scene capturing the quiet solitude of being on a Canadian lake at sunset is a fine example of his work, and is believed to have been painted on Rice Lake.

A well-travelled pathway is depicted skirting fields and the edge of a well wooded property. O’Brien shows how good he was at depicting the light glinting off the tops of a mixed hardwood Ontario summer landscape. He has portrayed the once plentiful Elm tree beautifully.

This is the quality and subject matter that made Wilkinson's reputation, for he has really caught the atmosphere of Canadian Rocky mountain landscape, its dashing river water as it streams through the boreal forest, and the towering snowcapped mountains in the background exceptionally well. Like F.S. Coburn before him, James Donnell was particularly adept at depicting winter scenes of horses hauling logs, this painting captures this necessary winter task, the silence of the snow broken only by the snorting of the horses and the swish of the cart’s runners.

John Hammond was a Canadian oil and watercolour painter, teacher and printmaker.  He joined the Geological Survey of Canada that was laying the tracks for the Canadian Pacific Railway.  He became a devout Christian, a trait that would be reflected in his art for the rest of his life. By the 1880s, he was in Europe, painting in Holland and in France with painters such as James Whistler and Jean-François Millet.  A member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts he was commissioned by William Van Horne, president of the CPR to create murals for the railway’s hotels and offices throughout Canada.

Almost overawed by a giant beech tree, below which a woman collects faggots near a forest bothy. A most interesting composition, with good foliage detail, from the hand of a master. He was an influential member of the new movement on Canadian painting.
