THE EXTERIOR OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE
[THE CHURCH OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE]

The exterior entrance to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, at the time of Roberts' Holy Week visit in March 1839, it led off a busy bazaar square, surrounded by ruined buildings and ancient belfry.
Roberts has given an added dimension of life to his composition by the inclusion of three men in Ottoman costume sitting on a parapet overlooking the square, long pipe and coffee close at hand.
