SECTION 9 - Fur trade rivalries, western survey and expansion 1780-1823 

The introduction compares the rivalry between the three principal fur trading companies of the Canadian north.Described are the explorations of David Thompson, Peter Fidler, Simon Frazer and others, together with the circumstances leading to the dominance of the Hudson's Bay Company. The various methods of canoe transportation are described, the establishment of the Red River settlement and the subsequent Pemmican war is also covered. Sir John Barrow's plans for the major role of the Royal Navy in forthcoming arctic exploration is detailed in one of the three maps in this section, another has unique manuscript additions, all of which are described to international standard. Four images further illuminate the times and transportation methods as the traders carried the economy of a nation on their backs.
